Another way to decorate a small living space and give the illusion of height and space in the room is to use crown molding. Crown molding is a wonderful way to make a room more attractive. The eye goes up to the top of the ceiling and gives the illusion of height. Crown molding can be painted the same color as the décor in the room, or you can use a regular wood grain molding which is wonderful addition to any room.
Consider What the Room Needs Does the room have built-in bookshelves and a space for the TV? If so, there's no reason to spend the extra money on an entertainment center or floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. Instead, opt for more seating options. Add an armchair or a love seat by a window to create a cozy reading nook. If the room is small, make use of hidden storage spaces. Add a coffee table with a shelf or drawers built in to keep the clutter from accumulating on the top, or use a storage ottoman to maximize storage space without sacrificing comfort.
If you don't want to invest in a completely new room, you can still change things enough to create a new look. Switch out pillows and pictures every three to six months to reflect the change of season. Change your curtains. Put new slipcovers on an old sofa. Use a wallpaper border instead of painting the whole thing. New lighting fixtures, or even new bulbs, can change the tone of your living room. Search home-improvement sites online. Many of them even have videos to help get you started with design ideas.
The only drawback of traditional living room furniture is that most pieces in this style are a bit large. So if you would like to furnish your living room in this style you need to have a large living room. Sofas, recliners and stand alone chairs generally come with curved and artistically done up handles and legs. These pieces need to be kept well apart so as not to give a crowded look to the room. Besides, it is only when they are placed apart can the craftsmanship be admired.
Other Looks Stay away from other looks when you are going Southern. Unique and modern styles simply don't fit in this type of living room. Abstract artwork with bright colors or hard angles won't bring the room together. Make sure if you are going with a "worn" look on your wood in the room that it doesn't seem too vintage.
