Take a good look at your home on a regular basis to see what needs updating or improvement. Be sure to shop at several stores when you are purchasing furniture so that you can see what the new looks are and compare prices. Sometimes you can get ideas to rearrange your furniture and just buy one new piece to give your living room a whole new look
But first, when should you stay away from a theme? A living room needs to be welcoming for you and your guests. However, if the purpose of decorating is to resell your home, stick with traditional colors and avoid personal accents. More people will be able to visualize it as their own.
Don't put your back of the couch facing the front door. You want to invite people in, and if people see a sofa back first, that places a barrier to your living space. Have an open area that invites a visitor in, especially when they come in through the front door.
You want to finish your look with some simple touch ups. Place a couple of logs in the fire so that you can light it when guests arrive. You may also want to light it when you want to snuggle up on the sofa. Your rustic look will be warm and inviting to everyone.
It is also important to combine different types of light bulbs. Mix up your supply of halogen, fluorescent etc., as well as warm white lights or cool blue lights to fit with the room setting, within your fixtures.
